Sweetgrass Octi Rods

We are always playing with bamboo to see what it can do. About 2 years ago, Glenn started thinking about adding an 8-strip rod to our already-full array of rod options. He had a special cutter built for the mill and built a 7'6" 4-weight. Some of you have cast that rod, and some of you now own Sweetgrass 8-strip rods. We are ready, after considerable testing and feedback, to "go live" with these rods.

These are wonderful rods. The narrow strips make the rods flex deeper into the butt section of the rod than our other configurations (4, 5 and 6-strip rods)...in the smaller sizes (under 5-weights), this is most noticeable as the rods feel slower, almost parabolic. In spite of this (or maybe because), they have surprising power and roll cast like a dream. In larger sizes (Glenn made an 8'6" #8-weight to take bonefishing on the windy flats of the Bahamas last Spring), the deeper flex is less noticeable, but the power is still there. Glenn's quote after that "research" trip was, "This thing cut through the wind like it was not even there."

So, if you are up for something different, and up for something rare, give us a call and we can build you one of any length or line weight, from a 5'9" 2-weight to a 9' 9-weight, in two or three pieces. For now, we are building these only as Sweetgrass models (2 tips, nicer hardware); at some point, we may extend this option to the Mantra series, but for now, only Sweetgrass orders will be built.
